Captured On Video: Footage Of Turrialba Volcano’s Latest Eruption

For nearly a month, Turrialba has lay dormant until yesterday when a new seismic activity erupted at 2 am on Tuesday morning.  Reporting the latest action, OVSICORI detailed the ash plume explosion reached approximately 300 meters (985 feet) above the volcano’s crater.

Many people took to OVSICORI’s Facebook page with posts claiming to smell sulfur and witnessing ash on the ground from communities north and east of the capital San José including Coronado, Moravia, Guadalupe, Tibás and Montes de Oca.

Vital Aid to Farmers

On Monday, President Luis Guillermo Solís announced a ₡2,4 billion ($4.3 million) emergency aid package to farmers and ranchers affected by the recent Turrialba volcanic activity along with the drought in the past few years.  His tour of the communities north and east of Cartago included the country’s biggest potato producers who supply 80 per cent of Costa Rica’s consumption.  Onions, carrots, yucca, cabbages, beets, flowers and other crops have also suffered badly from the falling ash according to the Agriculture Ministry.
