Deadline Now Set to Close Mercado Nacional de Artesanias in San José, Costa Rica

The municipality in San José have now set a deadline of the 30th September to close down the famous touristic Crafts Market in San José.  This controversial issue has been raging on since it was first built illegally, some two decades ago, on a public street in the capital.  Traders have been fighting back at the promised closure of the market, arguing that they have not been officially notified.

A proposed new site has been offered to the market traders, but in the red zone district of San José, where they have disputed the area is unsuitable for tourism.  In addition, they are unsatisfied with the reduced ground space made available of just 2 square meters as opposed to the existing 16 square meters they have now.

None-the-less, the government plans to demolish the site soon after the 30th September 2016 with the mayor confirming the traders will be evicted.  They have offered ₡1,000 million to promote the new location if the stall holders leave peacefully and accept the new deal.
