Pura Vida Guide wishes Happy Mother´s Day to All Costa Rica!

Historically, Mother´s Day can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who celebrated the day in honor of the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele.

Later on in 1908, an American lady called Anna Jarvis, re-created the special day to highlight the sacrifices mothers make towards their children, where through her efforts, Mother´s Day became an official U.S holiday in 1914.

However, the most modern precedent of Mother´s Day stemmed from an early Christian festival, particularly celebrated in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe.  Aptly titled “Mothering Sunday”, the day fell on the fourth Sunday during Lent where the congregation would return to their “mother church” (in the vicinity of their home), for a special service.  Traditions slowly shifted to become a celebratory day in honor of all mothers, with children bestowing flowers and small tokens of appreciation in thanks to their beloved Mom!

• Mother´s Day phone calls increases phone traffic by as much as 37 percent with the United States alone making 122 million calls to their Moms.

• Across the world , approximately $14 billion dollars is spent on Mother’s Day.

• In the former Yugoslavia, the children would tie up their mother´s on the day and only release them after they were promised to be rewarded by a special treat!

• Traditionally, carnations were given for Mother´s Day, pink and red for the living and white for those who had passed away.  It was thought the petals were made from the tears of Mother Mary whilst she wept at Jesus´s feet during His Crucifixion.
