COSTA RICA CELEBRATES THE 4TH OF JULY AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

CELEBRATING THE 4TH OF JULY in Costa Rica

By the late 50´s, the Costa Rican US expats had out grown the US Embassy´s picnic held at the ambassador´s house on the 4th July, so the American Colony Committee took over for there, and each year since, it just gets better and better. This year of the 56th annual 4th of July event, promises a spectacular traditional American welcome with a picnic of hot dogs, cool beers, dancing, games and the whole shebang in true U.S.A style!

This is one perfect day the U.S citizens can invite their Tico friends to party and share their own tradition on Costa Rican soil. Technically the celebration is starting a day early on Sunday 3rd, with a later fireworks display to continue on, after the picnic, at Avenida Escazú, beginning at 6:00 pm.

VENUE: As it has done for the past 50 years, the American Colony Committee is hosting the event at Cervecería Costa Rica in Alajuela just off the General Cañas Highway. Waze users can enter “2016 Picnic Parking” into the app for step-by-step directions. Also, see the map below for the new parking instructions (which has changed from last year), where a free shuttle bus is to be provided to take the event-goers to and from the picnic.

SCHEDULE: Starting at 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, with the momentous flag raising ceremony at 11:00 am. Singing of the U.S and Costa Rican national anthems will commemorate this special occasion with live music from the band CRC and a dancing show from the Coffee Pickin’ Squares to entertain the crowd and have everyone up cheering and dancing to America´s Country music….so don´t forget to bring your Cowboy hat! Other activities organized for the day will include face painting, water balloon contests, volleyball and sack races; children or juvenile adults need only apply!

CRITERIA: The event is open to U.S citizens and their families, permitting each to invite along one Costa Rican friend. It is required that you bring along your U.S passport with the Tico guests producing their cédula at the entrance. A small donation towards the day of ₡5,000 ($10) covers all the activities along with the picnic with children under 5 allowed to come in for free.
