PURA VIDA GUIDE´S TOP 5 TICO HOME REMEDIES FROM COSTA RICA!

Traditions among the natives of Costa Rica run deep and one great Tico custom is passing down their tried and tested remedies for all kinds of ailments.  So here´s our choice of what we consider to be five of the best ones that actually work!

GINGER AND LEMON for colds and flu

                                              Ginger And Lemon Tea

Two extremely beneficial ingredients renown for their healing abilities, ginger with enzymes to relieve digestion, nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness and pain.  Lemon primarily being an excellent source of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants, helps the immune system fight germs that cause colds and flu, so combined, these two, easily sourced ingredients can beat any medicine bought from the chemist.

Preparation: heat up 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of lemon juice and 3 tablespoons of grated ginger and allow to simmer for a few minutes and sip upon the liquid frequently throughout the day.  An extra boost from a tablespoon of honey helps with the taste along with soothing a sore throat.

RICE WATER for diarrhea

   Rice and water

Becoming dehydrated is a common side-effect with diarrhea and one main concern to keep in check, so the best way to control this is with a rice water drink.  Due to the high level of starch, rice has a therapeutic action within the intestinal mucosa to help reduce diarrhea along with the liquid to re-hydrate.

Preparation: Bring a cup of rice and three cups of water to the boil and simmer very slowly for 45 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink at least 3 glasses of the infused water at intervals during the day.

ROSEMARY WITH ALCOHOL for muscle pain

  rosemary and alcohol

This is a great way to combat muscle fatigue, injury and is also highly beneficial for cellulite circulatory disorders.

Preparation: Place a few sprigs of rosemary into a bottle of alcohol 90 ° and allow to infuse for 15 days.  Pour some of the strained liquid onto a cloth and place to the affected area, patting down gently as you go.  Store the remaining bottle of alcohol and rosemary in a cool, dark place for later use.

ALOE VERA for burns

  aloe-vera-gel

Regarded in high esteem for centuries for it´s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and healing properties, Aloe Vera is superb for helping to soothe and heal burns.

Preparation: Only the aloe plant is used and not the outer shell, so squeeze to remove the inside after washing and apply the liquid gold to the skin, just as you would a body lotion.

BEER AND CINNAMON for menstrual cramps

  Cinnamon and beer

These two ingredients combined have a greater effect at reducing menstrual pain with their anti-inflammatory qualities working extremely well together.

Preparation: Non-alcoholic beer is best, but failing that, boil the beer to lose the alcohol and then place a few cinnamon sticks to allow the beer to absorb the flavor.  It´s recommended to drink this liquid a day before the period is due and continue with this the day after, sipping small amounts throughout the day.
