Canopy Adventure Volcan Barva in a Nutshell

Canopy Adventure ‘Volcan Barva’ is located 1/2 and hour from San José on an amazing and majestic 1700 acre piece of land in San José de la Montana at the foot of the Barva Volcano, which is the largest volcanic mass in Central America. Of the 1700 acres, 700 have been set aside by the family for conservation purposes. A large portion of this area is a natural cloud forest, which is so very important for the watershed of San José.

“Canopy Adventure” is family owned and operated. The Canopy Tour takes you trekking and zip lining through the natural cloud forest and over ravines and waterfalls. It is truly an amazing and exhilarating experience that shows off Costa Rica’s natural beauty to fullest.

The canopy tour has 13 platforms with 8 cables suspended around massive oak trees, typical to old growth forests. The length of each zip line varies from 60 to 600 feet. The majority of the zip lines take you through the canopy tops with a few that literally take your breath away as you fly over waterfalls.

If you are perhaps a little terrified of heights, they also offer an ‘Adventure Park’ with some fantastic nature trails to hike as well as a newly developed mountain biking park.

Canopy Adventure is very focused on natural conservation and safety and is highly recommended by Puravida Guide.

Being quite a bit scared of heights, I was a little apprehensive at first. However, very soon into the tour, we we’re given full training, professional safety gear and a lot of kind encouragement from the amazing tour guides. The first zip line was a little scary, but after the second I was hooked! What you see zipping through the canopies is out of this world! Everyone was absolutely amazing, and the staff we’re helpful and a real pleasure! If you do have a fear of heights (like me) I still strongly urge you to try it out. And if you still don’t want to, they have acres and acres of unspoiled, tropical lush land where you can hike, mountain bike and explore the beauty of Costa Rican nature til your heart’s content! A true adventure play ground and only a 45 minute drive from the city! This is by far an unforgettable experience that I will cherish! Thank you to all who were involved :-) Pura Vida!

Excellent experience! Our guides were very sweet and helpful, Douglas and Jackson I remember for sure. They give you a quick 10 minute training session, then you are off to the first platform….very exciting! We did eight platforms…awesome! Two people in our group were extremely nervous but mustered the courage to do it, and absolutely loved it…no regrets! This company did a fantastic job, they use the wooden block brakes on the cables so you don’t have to worry about how to brake yourself at the end….just enjoy the view! I would definitely recommend Canopy Adventure Volcan Barva because I felt they were serious about safety, and were very experienced with first-timers.
Thanks for an awesome experience! Pura Vida!

On our last day in Costa Rica, we made arrangements with Ingrid, the owner, to do their canopy tour. They picked us up at our hotel near the San Jose Airport and within just a 30 minute drive, we were at their location. They are on the Heredia Mountain in the cloud forest.

This canopy tour is so much more than just a zip line. Ingrid is a trained forester and this 600-700 acres of forested land is operated by her and her family. You will learn about the cloud forest, how it functions, and some history of the area. Benjamin and Jeffrey were awesome tour guides – they knew alot and made the experience fun.

We debated about other canopy tours, but settled on this one because of a recommendation from a friend who lives in San Jose. This one was close to the airport and our hotel. It was on a mountain, so the stairs are easy to climb to the platforms and you go down the side of the mountain through the trees. This is much a better than climbing hundreds of stairs (like other canopy tours) to get to the zip line itself.

Safety was number one priority, however there was no lack of fun at this canopy tour. We had a great time and would go back!

When we were all finished with our canopy tour and arrived back at the office, they had beautiful Costa Rican coffee and a piece of cake waiting for us. A very nice touch. We purchased a tour that included a meal, and our group thought it was one of the best, if not the best meal we had while we were in Costa Rica. It was at the neighboring restaurant called Chago’s.

Thank you everyone for a great end to our time in Costa Rica. We are suffering withdrawls already!
